Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at the JP TOWER Hall & Conference in Tokyo’s Marunouchi District

TOKYO, February 16, 2016 — On May 15, 2015, The Wonder 500TM Project Manage Office launched a new project to select “local products that are the pride and joy of Japan but not yet known around the world” and introduce them to global markets. This exclusive collection of Japan’s best-kept local secrets is called The Wonder 500™. The project has discovered the best “hometown specialties” from around Japan and is promoting them leveraging an innovative coordinated approach, as part of the effort to invigorate local economies based on the “Cool Japan” approach under the Comprehensive Strategy for Region-Building. The 500 products chosen from all over Japan were announced to the public on August 27, 2015.

The Wonder 500™ Tokyo Presentation Event will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at the JP TOWER Hall & Conference in Tokyo’s Marunouchi district. The event will feature a report on project activities undertaken to date, a keynote speech by President & CEO Hiroshi Ohnishi of Mitsukoshi Isetan Holdings, presentations by leading buyers from outside Japan about what makes Japan so attractive to overseas markets, as well as an announcement about future project plans from the project management office. There will also be a networking event for the makers of the products, the overseas buyers, and other interested parties, where a selection of products from The Wonder 500™ will be on display.

The Wonder 500™ is an exclusive selection of goods, foods, and travel experiences chosen from all 47 of Japan’s prefectures based on two criteria: “items which convey the refined taste and persistent passion of their maker” and “innovative items which combine Japan’s unmatched craftsmanship and services supported by traditional Japanese values.” The collection of 500 products is being broadly promoted outside Japan.

There have been many project activities in Japan already. In September 2015, a special exhibition of all 500 products was held at the 80th Tokyo International Gift Show Autumn 2015. Then, in November, 343 of the products were exhibited at the national treasure Takaoka-san Zuiryu-ji Temple. Also in November, educational seminars on overseas development were held with local business owners in Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka, and then again on February 12, 2016 in Sendai. A similar seminar takes place in Sapporo on Friday, February 19.

Now, capping off all of these Japan-based activities, The Wonder 500™ Tokyo Presentation Event will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016. President & CEO Hiroshi Ohnishi of Mitsukoshi Isetan Holdings will give the keynote speech. Presentations will also be made by Yannick Dufait, the Shop General Manager of the well-known Parisian select retailer FLEUX’, as well as lead buyers from the popular Hong Kong shops PMQ and Kapok, plus Taiwan’s eslite, VVG, xiaoqi, and FUJIN TREE — giving a good picture of what makes Japan so appealing around the world. A networking event will also be held with makers of The Wonder 500TM products, which are so deserving of global appreciation, thus contributing to the worldwide promotion of this exclusive collection of Japan’s finest products, the pride and joy of local Japan.

In addition, The Wonder 500TM Project Manage Office will announce future plans for The Wonder 500TM, including private-sector continuation of the project next fiscal year, as well as action plans for business model development projects next fiscal year and beyond.

By discovering Japan’s most appealing local products that are not yet known around the world and then promoting them both in and outside of Japan, The Wonder 500™ project will support local businesses and SMEs with the network-building, PR and marketing needed to develop effective new sales channels outside Japan.
